I take it over to somebody else, point to the geekiness in question and ask, "Am I impressed by this?" :) It's a crime that unrelated education is still the trump card in some hiring processes. Nobody should care whether or not you have a Sociology degree, if the job is laying cable. You have varied life experience, and I'd bet it taught you a heck of a lot more.
