If you look after them you can get 500 cycles with less that 20% drop. Similarly if stored/used correctly you will get no significant age impact on the capacity. The problem is that things like the iPod try to get every last drop of life out of the cells every cycle and then charge them as quick as they can. Good for marketing, very very bad for long term use. Similarly decrease over time is more a function of use and storage than anything else.
