First of all I think that z1roots comments should be tatooed accross the heads and minds of anyone who has taken a gun course. He makes the point that a pistol is VERY VERY hard to aim at the best of times. Even harder to aim at a moving target, and even harder to aim when your heart is pumping and addrialin is going.
While I always find it hard to rebutt stories like yours, it isn't because of lack of facts. A house that has a gun in it is 10 times more likly to have a family memeber shot with that weapon then to use the weapon for self defense. So while there are stories like your friend's out there, for every one of those stories, there are 10 about how a man's son found his gun and blew his head off, how two children playing with a found weapon were killed when it went off by accedent. Stories about how a wife or a husband, in a moment of rage grabs that gun and in a second distroys two lives. Of people comming home unexpectetly and being shot by their overzellous loved ones who think they are a burglar. Had that situation gone even a LITTLE differntly, as it very well could, you friend would be dead, and her murderer would now have a gun instead of a knife. It may sound calus to say this, but is the life of your friend worth the lives of those children?
My heart goes out to both you and your friend. But more violence is NOT the answer. Countries with strict gun laws have proven that the murder rate, and just about ever indicator for violent crime goes DOWN when guns are taken out of the picture. Remeber, the US is the only western democracy to still have unlimited firearm ownership, and it is by FAR the most violent country in the western world.
Lastly I would like to address your first paragraph. Reread z1roots situation. He, as someone who was trained in guns, wouldn't have been able to draw aim and fire a weapon at his attacker by the time he knew he was being attacked. If suddenly you are confronted by a man attacking you, or robbing you, do you really think that you will have time to go into your purse, find and pull out your gun, take the safety off, chamber a round, aim and fire???? More likily you will just provide your attacker with a gun.
You will probibly hate me now, and I honestly don't blame you. But I just can't trade the life of one innocent woman that a gun saved, for the lives of 10 innocent people who had to pay for her owning that gun. |
