I've seen a couple of incidents where the contact was hand to hand close and the gun was fired effectively. The point is you have to know what you are doing. here is one example. I know of a much more vivid one but my account would be second hand and undocumented, and I do not know all of the details other than the good guy lived, the bad guy died and there were a lot of bullet holes needing to be patched in the house. Every shot was a hit but he was using 9mm ball. Now he carries a .45 loaded with hollow points.
