so when I'm taking a course that requires memorization I have to put it down on pieces of paper, keep them in my pocket and refer to them periodically during the day - it gradually sinks in. Most topics require some basic facts to be memorized. The hardest for me was a medical terminology course, but I did the paper in pocket thing and with a lot of work managed to do pretty well. You're right, though, it's a pain to have to memorize things.
