I went through the pain-staking process of disconnecting the server, which is a 1U server sitting in a rack full of other 1U servers with a conspicuous absence of those extender arm things that hold all the cables, which is what made it a pain-staking process, and I checked the internal connections. The controller cable was horribly loose. sigh Thanks for everyone's suggestions yesterday.
