Don't beat yourself up about it. You were being kind to others, and that is a commendable trait. Their failure to do likewise is their shortcoming, not yours. Understand this about yourself. That you were being kind and considerate, not a fool.

Same when you helped your friend with the bug spray. They were being fools. Not you.
