It goes back to tribal times, when rejection from tribe members could mean your expulsion. This leads to being outcast and therefore the loss of the security of the tribe. It was a fear that had its basis in very real survival terms back then.

It is why when you receive thirty compliments and one (nasty) criticism that you only focus on the criticism -- you're trying to assess a threat to your acceptance in the tribe.
