what sort of socket? how old is the house? what sort of wiring?

just guessing again, but those old ceramic sockets can have their contacts work loose after a while if the wires were twisted around the screws the wrong way, or if the socket is old enough or there's moisture around it may have corroded or just plain died. check fo rpower to the leads of teh socket, it's probably just a dead socket, and an easy fix, even with the power live(not that i'm advocating this as it can be dangerous) sinc eyou can kill it at the switch, and you've got mroe room to move the wires around w/o the tighter confines of a switch box/plug box.
