Weird electrical problem: by Blindman 2005-03-16 07:42:27
Last night I flipped on the light in our bedroom, POOF, all the overhead lights in the bedroom, hallway, living room, dining room and kitchen as well as the outlet that the microwave is on, go out.

OK, I go down to check the breaker - it's on! I flip it off anyway and reset it - lights are still out.????

Ok, Home Depot is only 5 minutes away - I go get a new breaker...same result????

Next, I go digging around and get out my multimeter - there is power through the breaker!

Now I'm thinking that a connection has come loose in one of the junction boxes - and it so happens that I installed the ceiling fan/light in the bedroom. I get the ladder out and open the box - not only is there nothing obvious, the meter shows no power!

So I give up, contact an electrician friend to come out today. The last thing I do is to turn off the powerstrip that the microwave is plugged into ( the cord doesn't reach the outlet and it is the only thing on the strip ). I go downstairs, flip the breaker again, VOILA! the lights come back on. So I then turned the strip back on...everything still works!

I unplugged the power strip and went to bed.

Anybody of heard of a power strip failing in such a way that all power on the entire circuit just disappears? I'm thinking I'll just toss that powerstrip and get a new one.
