Your boss may be a little peeved but in the long run he will acknowledge you made the right call. Which IMO you did. I learned over the years that sometimes you have to grab the bull by the yamsack and make the decisions yourself. Especially when there are others involved who have a hard time deciding which side of the toilet paper to wipe with! Let alone critical business decisions.
