I remember in High School taking the by radiowave911 2005-03-15 18:29:46
computer class (there was only one at first) and we hade state-of-the-art Apple II machines in the typing classroom. We learned basic BASIC programming (no, that is not redundant!) When I was either a sophomore or senior (I think it was senior) I took a Fortran class as an elective. One other student and myself got bored in the class. We would learn a concept/instruction (or two) and then get a programming assignment based on what we learned. The problem came in that we had an entire WEEK to do the assignment. My friend an I were usually finished by the end of class. We entered the programs into the school's IBM mainframe (not sure what it was, maybe a 360) via dumb terminals. Output was to a line printer in the office (same place as the terminals). There were two terminals. The instructor pulled us out of the class and set up a private class just for the two of us. By the middle of the school year, we had covered the entire Fortran class and had moved on to assembler.
