Truly, I am curious. I've heard & read both versions: - that it's the kiss of death as far as the guy is concerned (desperate woman -- run away!) or - that the guy is flattered to bits. 'Kiss of death version' is from the book "He's just not that into you" -- namely that a woman has no hope for a long relationship if she asks the guy. That it's the guy's primal instinct to give chase -- and the woman's primal instinct to give hints. I do recall reading about sociological studies in the field (i.e. bars) finding that women initiate male-female contact about 2/3 of the time -- by body language and that famous 3-second stare.
