But going back and reading the article again with your comments here in mind, I can see your point. First off, I agree that the CBC article provided a lot more useful information than the Fox article, but I ceded that in my previous post as well.
I think it really was a heavy dose of skepticism and BS filters that helped me get the gist of the truth from the Fox article. For one, the headline reads "Vancouver Tries Free Heroin Program", so I immediately assumed the whole thing was about a trial and not a fully instituted program, and the article never directly contradicted that, so I stuck with that understanding. But now that you point it out, I can see how someone could get the impression from that article that it wasn't just a trial run. On the other hand, it mentioned that they plan to enroll just 470 participants spread across sites in 3 cities. The fact that they're dealing with such a small number of participants backs up the idea that it's a trial and not a full blown program.
Similarly, they had a quote at the beginning of the report from the doctor in charge of the program stating its goals, and a quote from a police chief saying that trying to reduce the crime rate by providing the drugs for free was a good goal. From those two quotes, I picked up on the basic goals of the program. But again, I can see where you're coming from. I read a lot between the lines by assuming that everyone in Canada hadn't lost their minds, and filling in sensible motives and plans to fill in the gaps. Being at least vaguely aware of previous similar programs in Europe probably helped form my assumptions, as well.
As for the quotes from the junkies, I completely ignored them as it was obviously worthless filler ;-)
So I suppose what it really boils down to is that I've been exposed to American "journalism" for long enought that I've developed a really high level of cynicism and scepticism when it comes to any news I read from mainstream American sources. As a result, I tend to interpret everything in the least sensational, most mundane way possible unless they spell out something bigger in black and white, rather than just hinting that it's something huge. But for someone who hasn't become that jaded to media, I can now see how that really is very sensationalist and over the top. |
