      What does mount say when you try? (n/ (n/t) by jiteo2005-03-15 14:14:01
        /dev/hda is not a valid block device. by hadji2005-03-15 14:18:31
          What happens when you: by bwkaz 2005-03-15 14:41:05

"ls -l /dev/hd?"

(Without the quotes.)

Does ls show the correct type, major, and minor numbers? My system shows:

$ ls -l /dev/hd?
brw-rw----    1 root     disk       3,   0 Mar 15 10:45 /dev/hda
brw-rw----    1 root     disk       3,  64 Mar 15 10:45 /dev/hdb
brw-rw----    1 root     disk      22,   0 Mar 15 10:45 /dev/hdc
$

if that helps. (I use udev, so I don't have an hdd, but if I did, it would be "brw-rw---- ... 22, 64" for block, major 22, minor 64.)
