WHY does NT (XP - whatever) DO THAT???? by ChuckAB2005-03-15 12:48:41
Now this is just crappy. by ChuckAB 2005-03-15 13:48:49
I finished the install and I'm trying to move drive letters around (I want the second HD partition to be "D", the CD to be "E" and the ZIP drive to be "F").

The machine booted up with the following:

A: Floppy
C: Boot Drive (HD 1st partition)
D: Zip Drive
E: System Drive (HD 2nd partition)
F: CDRW

WTF?!?

OK - reletter the drives using Drive Manager. Won't let me reletter E because it's a system drive. Taking a careful look, I see that the swap file is on C, but the boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM and ntldr are on E!!

I think I know what may have happened. When I first ran the setup, I had already deleted the 1st partition thereby making the second partition appear to be C: when I got to the place where I determined where to put the installation. Since I already had experience with a machine where the data drive became C: and the system/boot drive became E:, I didn't want this. So I exited the installation (F3-F3), ran fdisk, created a FAT32 partition, and re-ran the RIS.

Ah well, at least it was a learning experience on a computer that wasn't that important (it was a test machine, remember...).

So much for putting an image on a drive with pre-existing partitions.
