In fact, to keep the drive letters straight, I had created a FAT32 partition (size: 8001MB) that SETUP deleted and replaced with a 7993MB NTFS partition. The free space is OUTSIDE the partition.

I know what you're talking about with free space. I defragmented a drive that had W2K on it with an NT 4.0 machine. It moved the files to allow for the system stuff at the beginning of the partition, however, that was INSIDE the partition - not outside.
