From this KB article, it states:

The Windows NT version 3.xx file system keeps a duplicate copy of the NTFS boot sector at the logical center of the volume, whereas Windows NT version 4.0 keeps a duplicate copy at the end of the partition.
If WinXP is using the NT4 boot sector rules, then the space at the beginning and end of the drive is for the boot sector copies.
