DNS woes by archnerd 2005-03-15 12:48:04
So, a few years ago a friend of mine signed up with a little no-name virtual web hosting provider. Said friend is pretty non-technical; he did the page with Dreamweaver and that's about the limit of his abilities. Last year he got fed up with the level of downtime, so I agreed to host his page on the dedicated server I was running at the time. I've since moved him around a couple times but that's a separate story.

Anyway, his domain registration is set to expire in a month. I'm the technical contact. He still uses the original virtual hosting provider as his registar; they subcontract with Enom. That's a triple whammy: a crappy virtual hosting provider offering a crappy client interface to a notoriously crappy domain registrar. He can't renew the domain with the original registrar without having to pay for another year of hosting that he isn't going to use, so I told him I'd transfer it to the registar that I use for my other domains. One problem: I can't get an authcode! Enom won't talk to me because the domain is owned by the hosting provider's account, and I can't get hold of the hosting provider. They aren't answering their phone and they aren't answering their email.

Just to top it all off, he uses the domain for his email as well as his website. So, if the domain expires, he won't be able to get his email until the 30-day retention period ends.

AARGH!
