I ran 2k at home for 4 yrs, and it was less than stable. Even after uninstalling whatever hosed it, it was never the same. When mainstream software like the APC UPS control SW hoses an OS, that OS is not stable. I had trouble with ALL USB device drivers, everything from intermittent lockups to blue screens on removing a device, even after stopping it correctly. The machine would not shut down for a good 20 min after clicking the shutdown button.
Now I installed some wild stuff on it, testing software and utilities.
Now I have XP, and noticed that 90% of the utilities I needed under W2K are no longer required. The tools that come with XP are stable and perform well. You need only a very few add-on utils to make XP a very nice desktop system indeed.
I run all the primary apps that I used to have under W2K and they not only run smoother, but don't have the lockups and such as experienced under W2K.
My W2K system was a P866EB with 512mb ram and several HDs
My new XP system is an FX55 with 2gb - this will account for the speed and smoothness of XP.
If you try it on a P450 with 128mb, you deserve what you get. It will run slowly, if at all, and hang often due to insufficient resources.
If XP is hanging, and you have decent hardware, perhaps the apps you use are old and need updating? |
