Gentoo can be a bit tricky sometimes, but I like to think that most problems that come with it are just similar to other distributions. One thing might be that by default gentoo doesn't load up all that much drivers and such that other distros do. My first question therefore is that do you have corrent drivers loaded with the kernel, If you type 'ifconfig' as root do you see the eth0 interface there?

PS. If this was already asked and answered earlier, sorry for the redundant post.
