it's a subscription model, you have to pay to get anything, and IIRC it doesn't come with dev tools at all. similar reasons to avoid suse personal, no dev tools at all. mandrake isn't bad for people new to linux, just don't expect to do anything even slightly odd with it (even installing software can be a pain sometimes), because of the evil of rpm. Easy to use installer, decent gui configs. (you just won't learn much about linux with all the GUI around)
