because by working for myself and having no social life (thus no formal events) I can get away with it. I have couple of semi-formal shirts, a sportcoat and a clip-on tie burried in the back of my closet (that I got for high school and college graduation and a couple fortunately-failed job interviews), but it is my hope that I will never, ever wear such things. I wear jeans and t-shirts every day, dressing formally means I put on shoes to go outside.
