ok so your Volvo is in comparsion to my car by joecrouse 2005-03-10 14:39:32
Slightly under my 87 Chevy in terms of fuel efficiency.
On the highway I can get up to about 27-30 mpg. But realisticaly its about 25-28 durring normal driveing.)55-70 miles an hour.

Not bad for a v6 thats almost 20 years old. Now around town Ill admit that its a guzzler. In stop and go traffic I get 17-20.
thats an average if older american car.
The only real guzzlers are the heavy duty vehicles like hummers and f350 super crew cabs with full beds and dual wheels in back.
(The f350 super crew is the longest production non diesl around)
or the Dodge Ram 3500 Hemi engined behemouths.
Those are excessive but frankly if you have them most people use them for what they were entailed for, hauling and moving lots of heavy stuff.

my car would get much better mileage if i took out a lot of the anti smog systems that are mandatory in American cars. Of course I wouldnt need half the horsepower my engine is capable of if I didnt have them either. my engine if all the smog systems are removed and useing straight pipes no muffler i can get up wards of 230 hp. But because of all the anti smog equipment im limited to 140.
