Here, we have photo radar speeding tickets. Plain and simple a money grab. They take a picture of your car, along with the radar reading, and send you a bill. Only good thing about it is that it doesn't affect your driving record. The theory is, that you are responsible for what your car does, but since they didn't pull you over, they can't prove that you were driving.
Just recently an entire month's worth of speeding tickets were invalidated by a judge. Seems that the operator (who is a contractor, BTW) wasn't checked out on the specific equipment used, only on similar equipment. They returned ~3,000 tickets' worth, totalling ~$700,000. Very profitable, and it DOES keep the speeding down. Or at least makes sure that people who go fast keep alert - so they can slow down when they see the radar van:-) |
