it happens sometimes if firefox crashes/the entire computer crashes, and possibly for other reasons (phase of the moon etc). The bookmarks are stored (on windows 2000 at least) in a file called bookmarks.html I think... in Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[randomfoldername]\ copying it from there works as a backup :-) [I only do this now after the selfsame thing happened to me when apache took the entire computer down for some reason]
