How to deal with plumbers on the construction site by techi8702006-11-19 12:55:59

We had an outside contractor that was supposed by Havoc 2005-03-10 10:29:43
to run cable, install custom hardware for their application, and get it all installed and working before he left. This is for an application server that his company has been trying to get us to allow on-site for YEARS (to share our video feeds), we finally caved in. He arrived late, we showed him the target cabinet we had thoughtfully allocated to him. We showed him how the raised floor tiles come up, and left him to it.

When the floor tiles came up, he saw that we had literally 50+ runs of fiber/cat6 running through there. I went back 10 min later to check on him, and he was busily tracing the runs. I asked him what he was doing, and he said that instead of running cable he was just going to find one of these that was unused and use it instead.

AII! EXCUSE ME! LART LART LART!

Put the kabosh on that right quick. Told him to drop a check for $1000 on my desk to cover the original expense of the cabling, and then he could use existing cable. He grumbled and started getting his cabling gear out.

30 min later he is trying to recruit three guys to help him run cable - these are the people who work on the floor he is trying to run cable under - he has them holding spools, fishing wires, pulling, etc. We shut him down QUICK. These guys aren't supposed to be helping HIM, they have jobs to do. The 'helpers' got an earful as well.

So he leaves after 6 hrs, system not installed, heck, the rack is still empty! The wire is run but not terminated. I'm wondering just WTF he was doing all day. I could have had it all done by then! Turns out he spent over an hour on the phone with his boss whining about the lack of help, and another hour with the head guy here at work trying to get help running cable or permission to use existing cable. If he had just RUN THE FREAKIN CABLE he would be done.

Lazy. Stupid too.

Today, we get a box with a Cisco 2500 in it, with a note that we need to install this in the cabinet, terminate the cables, plug them into the Cisco, and program it with one of our laptops.

Signed, the contractor dude.

We just put the box and all in 'his' rack and closed the panel. I wanted to stamp it 'Not Our Problem' and send it back to him, but I was voted down. ;)
