a tie should be of a normal smart type. I think wearing something like that would be worse than not wearing one.
Looking tidy and well presented can be important but you don't want him to look like he's going out for a meal instead of a job.
There's a difference between business smart and dress smart, IMO.

Can your SO get any inside line on what sort of thing the interviewer might expect? I went for my current job wearing casual trousers and a polo shirt, as I knew that the interviewer would be interested only in what i could do, not what my wardrobe was like.
