Significance in a statistical context? by bobmon 2005-03-10 04:58:51
Many statistical measures are basically comparisons of (differences between) two measurements. The measurements are typically averaged values.

"Signficance" genreally refers to a technique that tells you whether or not the two averaged measurements are actually different or not.

For example, weigh an object 3 times, get an answer of 1.234 gm. Weigh another object 3 times, get an answer of 1.226 gm. Do the objects weigh the same, or different? (Maybe they both weigh 1.230 gm in reality). A "T-test" calculation may find that your objects are signficantly different at the 75% confidence level, which means that 3 times out of 4 the objects really do have different weights.
