Of course, "You are not going to do this to the country"[1] would have been better heeded in between his previous, electoral loss and the breaking of the Watergate scandal; instead of only when an impeachment conviction was clearly inevitable.
I have no idea when he actually became aware of the break-in, since the incriminating tapes only go back so far; but he should have been the one to blow the lid off, himself, rather than risk some else's doing so. Major, strategic blunder, for Tricky Dick, there.
