Benefit programs like Social Security do *not* provide enough to support oneself, unless one has assets like a paid-off house (or, perhaps, a rent-controlled apartment occupied for decades), in many parts of the country; corporate pensions have an ugly habit of going belly up; and private investments can crash, horribly[1] .

[1] In the years immediately before and after her death, my grandmother's investments--much of them in fundamentally sound companies--lost something like *eighty percent* of their value--much of this due to the general crash touched of by the tech crash following the dot.bomb and the M$ verdicts.)
