This has quite a lot more to do with supporting them in their old age--traditionally, an obligation on the part of the child--than with mere obedience to authority. Indeed, even if they abuse their authority as parents, tradition tends to hold that the obligation *still* stands (though priests, rabbis and such have argued over this "fine point" for quite literally millennia).

It's also the basis for quite a lot of concern on my part, as my wife and I were never able to have children, and we certainly aren't getting any younger! Meanwhile, the various extrafamilial mechanisms for supporting people in advanced age are looking shakier all the time.
