Medication question... by OnDemand 2005-03-08 15:20:05
OK I had been taking 30 Mg Aderal daily for ADD. So has my brother and until a month ago my dad. Sometimes when I would run out of meds I sometimes took them out of my brothers bottle (as did he of mine). Considering he took the same dosage of the same medication I did not consider it a problem. Well recently my doctor suggested I switch to 36 mg of Concerta daily, which my father and sister take for ADD. Along with the prescription we were given a "coupon" for a free bottle. I had misplaced the coupon and still haven't found it. In the mean time I have been taking my fathers pills (he knows about it so its ok with him). Which again is the same dosage of the same medication I am prescribed for. Today I got a call from the doctors office to schedule a "medication evaluation" to see how I was doing with the new medication. The conversation went like this....

Secretary: So have you gotten your prescription filled yet?
Me: Um.. We lost the coupon you guys gave use so...
Secretary: You haven't been taking them?
Me: Well, my dad has the same dosage of the same medication so...
Secretary: You've been taking his?
Me: yeah
Secretary: Ok, if you want to come down to the office we can give you a new coupon.
Me: Ok
Then we went on to schedule the appointment.

So my questions are:

  1. Is it OK to take someone's medication that is the same dosage of the same medication you are prescribed for with their knowledge and consent?
  2. Is this something I could "get in trouble for"? I was hesitant on telling the secretary because I was concerned on how she would react. But she didn't ask me any more questions about it. So I assume it's all right.
