As in, "Daddy's job evaporated when his industry caved in, and though he has been looking for suitable work for the last eighteen months, nobody will hire him for more than minimum, because his experience is no longer 'relevant'."
Or didn't you consider the possibility that a family might suffer a severe, financial reversal, long after the kids are born. <sarcasm character=hyperbolic>Do you propose we "off" them, so that nobody tries to feed a family on minimum wage?</sarcasm>
Don't *even* try to call my example preposterous: I have seen it happen, and have at times been in similar circumstances, myself. I spent an entire year looking, in 1992--the same year as much as a third of the "headhunters" in the USA "went under", because the bottom fell out of parts of the job market, and they could not place professionals like myself. I was fortunate that I *didn't* have kids, as my wife and I *had* been trying (in vain, as it turns out), when the axe fell.
