I could try looking up what optimisations are turned off by each step, but - life is too short.

It sounds like a problem you can endure.

Different suggestions: if it's a flatscreen, is it backlight related? Or the program could well be messing with gamma levels on initialisation. Could be a bug in the firmware - do you have up to date firmware and drivers?

All a lot of trouble, you see. Let it slide, I think.
