taking it down to one notch above minimum (ie zero) sorted the issue, but nothing else has the issue, so I'm reluctant to leave it there.

Refresh rate: 72Hz.

Symptom: screen darkens, then flicks back to full brightness. It's actually rather less than I implied; it occurs once on application startup, and twice on loading the menu screen. Framerate is a non-issue, although I could always ask Fraps.

As for your other suggestions, wouldn't know what to frob. This is ExPee...
