It originally was a typo at some con that I don't rememember the name of. The name stuck and generally means science orriented folk music. The genre is pretty vague as some consider Wierd Al's Yoda and Bowies Space Oddessy to be filk, others are more purist and consider filk is only a 12-string, a voice and an audience of geeks. Anyone you ask will generally give you a different definition. Also filk is often humerous, but there's a sub-genre called Ose. The joke is that song was "ose, ose, and morose." Ose tunes are not happy. Filk is often parodies.

Leslie Fish is excellent, Heather Alexander is very good, Tom Smith is hilarious. Bob kanefsky has a tendency of parodying other filk artists, and often gets them to sing his version of their song.

http://www.tomsmithonline.com is the only url I can think of off the top of my head. He has downloadable tunes.

If you're interested, I can give a list of my favorite sings and songs later tonight.
