. . . I suppose. We may not get to choose with whom we share our blood; but, ultimately, we have to choose with whom we share what parts of our lives we can.
(*sighs, lets the "permanence" of DNB's absence from our midst sink in, for a moment*)
This whole bunch seems very much more like "family" than "merely friends"--right down to the odd, characteristic mix of camaraderie and fractiousness. In a way, we are already "sitting virtual shiva"--or so it seems, to me. Likewise, in some strange way, we seem to have a sort of "virtual minjan", assembled across (AFAICT) multiple continents, no less! It can become difficult *not* to feel each others' presence, in spirit if not in body, at times like this.
If we are truly honest about it, our physical existence is really no less tenuous, no less ephemeral, than is our virtual presence "here". In the long run, we all, like the grass, fade and wither. Chris's passing of course reminds us of this--really, of the nature of who we are. May what follows bring us peace, through that fond memory in which nobody is ever entirely "gone".
