While I have no hard numbers about the proportion of our population here who has served in the military (or an immediate family member), it's not surprising that they would display the flag on their vehicle. Right after the 9/11 attacks we had almost everybody flying those stupid little car-window flags, but now the flags I mostly see are from military people or "my brother/son/husband serves in the..." flags and stickers. And I live in a very "red" state. Also immigrants tend to feel extra patriotic about their adopted country. You tend to see a lot of American flags in immigrant neighborhoods.
