Your country's flag is a visible symbol of your country. It's always been an honor in war to carry the flag, even though the flag-bearer is almost always killed. There are a couple of reasons, actually:
The flag is a symbol of your country
The flag is a source of pride for your army/people
If you can capture and/or destroy your enemy's flag, it is a very demoralizing thing. Having your flag in your enemy's hands is just bad. Read your history. There have been symbols and flags carried into battle for eons. Even in Biblical times, the Jews carried the Ark of the Covenant into battle with them. And when it was lost to the enemy (it happens several times), the Jews lost the battle they were fighting. A couple of times they were almost entirely wiped out. There are other stories about flags and other symbols, but that's the only one I can think of right now -- probably because I was just reading my Bible this morning. :-) |
