it depends on the boys, more than on the parents.
I 've been told that I had found some "stick" (but it was iron!) to put into a current outlet. (Really, back then "child proof" was an outlet with a turning disc: couldn't stop MY curiousity) and when I got "hit" I told my mom that "Reddy Kilowat had BITTEN me", only to move on to the next outlet and asking: "Is he in here TOO?"
Well, I believed her when she confirmed that "he was, and he's angry already"
It seems that children LEARN from their experiences, much faster than from "explanations" or from "being told to be afraid".
Of course, that type of outlets is forbidden now. Any toddler today should have TWO of those pins, but will get hurt much more because WHEN (not if) he succeeds in putting both in the outlet, he will be holding them firmly in both hands.
I think that putting DANGEROUS and PRECIOUS stuff "out of reach" has three advantages:
. . . . a) it's a fantastic motivation for the child's IMAGINATION: what is that, why is it put away ... and ... HOW can I reach and touch it IN SPITE OF it being (now) out of reach
. . . . b) for some time it will protect the toddler from "harm beyond possible repair", but only UNTILL he'll figure out a)
. . . . c) it protects the PARENTS from heart attack, every time toddler comes too close to that crystal vase they bought overpriced in Wertheim while visiting "europe" or that "unique handpainted marimba". This too, only UNTIL a) is still in the phase of conception. |
