I was there a few years ago (I was born there, but left when I was 3), and my friends told me that basically, being a cyclist on the roads was asking for a lethal accident, and they were not kidding.

Actually, I did have this thought in the back of my mind that America suffers from overweight Americans because they go everywhere by car; thanks for offering an explanation. I felt kind of caught out when I realised that you'd guessed my thoughts.... ^_^ There's also the fact that you travel much larger distances to work etc., methinks.

It's an annoying dilemma allright, with the cars. People don't cycle because of the cars, and drive because they can't cycle.
I'm very happy that I live in a country where 10-year-olds can cycle to school alone.
