I'm suprised that you aren't getting marked on security. We had a coursework like this too, and it was pretty focused on not just features (like proper support for things like conditional GETs) but on awareness (and, preferrably, addressing) of security issues. I implemented connection pooling -- it's pretty easy really (at least in Java -- C[++] was an option, but I didn't feel like socking-bashing in C-land).
