The Vogons saved the universe. Twice. Think about it. The answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42. But the question is not understood. So the earth was created as a computer to understand the question. Only problem with that is that if the question and the answer were ever to both be known, the universe would instantly pop out of existence and be replaced with something even stranger.

So along come the Vogons, just as the earth is nearing completion of it's task, and destroy it, thereby preventing both the question and the answer being known.

Well, only problem with that is the earth somehow popped into existence again. And along come the Vogons again (why do I want to keep typing Vorlons?) who destroy it yet again, and this time for good, again preventing both the question and the answer being known.

The repeated obstruction by the Vogons to attaining said knowledge prevents the universe from popping out of existence. As for the earth and humanity, well they would have been destroyed anyway. So . . . the Vogons are the true heroes of the HGTTG.
