I was helping a friend hook up his router to his new cable modem. The cable modem has both an Ethernet and a USB port on it, but only the USB port works. After an hour of troubleshooting, and not getting anything out of the modem, we spoke to his roommate, who was home when the cable guy came by, and discovered that the cable guy couldn't get the Ethernet port to work either, but the roommate accepted it, since it could connect to _his_ machine via USB.
They are going to request a replacement modem, and claim that they have too many USB devices already plugged in, but this might take a while to get replaced.
Meanwhile, we were wondering if there was a router that would use the USB interface on the cable modem, do the usual NAT for Ethernet connections?
(Yes, we _could_ build a crappy little Linux box as a firewall - if we had any crappy little boxen around) |
