Video card question. by jdelphiki2005-02-28 11:35:51

It looks like your best bang for the buck is gonna be only a slight upgrade from what you have number wise, but something along the lines of a Radeon 9600 pro will suit you better than an x300 (which is the latest generation, but lowest card). Similarly, on the nVidia side of the fence you can go with a fx5700LE (midgrade fx, but neutered a bit) or a 6200 (newest generation but lowest end) for about that price.

I'd stay away from the low end of any line of video cards (fx5200 won't be much better than what you have) and personally would recommend nVidia over ATI for driver reasons (both windows and 'nix).

Price searching done on newegg.com, go to video cards, put 100 in as a max price (or 115 to catch the few things just above) and then sort by highest price to work your way down the line. Hopefully this link will work. (be mindful that I didn't chose a slot to put it in, so you've got PCI-X along with AGP in there. Doublecheck your motherboard specs to see if you have AGP8x or only 4x capabilities).
