Video card question. by jdelphiki 2005-02-28 11:35:51
I recently bought Doom3 and am slowly working my way through it, but for everything else that my Dell has on it, my video card is somewhat lacking.

My Dell has the Radeon video card that is one notch below the minimum card supported by D3 (I can't remember the specific number...9200, perhaps?) and I'm considering an upgrade.

As it stands, D3 plays pretty well, even with the less-than-perfect card. I suspect that the graphics could be a LOT better if I didn't have to run on the low-graphics option. The main issue is that the characters are rendered with a shade line running straight up the middle of their faces. And I reckon that the dark might give up just a little better light if I had a decent, supported card.

My question is this: what kind of video card should I get?

D3 appears to like GeForce and Radeon, but as a video card idiot, I don't know which would be better or if an upgrade will make that much difference for me.

I don't do a lot of gaming. I tend to find a game I like and play it through all the stages of every level, searching for every secret or piece of junk I can pick up. Drives my kids crazy (although they would call me the a4 name (starts with "a" and ends with "nal").

Given that, it probably won't make much sense for me to by a $400 card that will give me all this really cool video processing on a computer (P4 2.4GHz) that will be obsolete by next year (if not already). My budget will likely only allow <= $100.

So what'll work (if anything)?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thx,
Bean
