AR15 Project Complete, Project #2 starting by DesertRat66 2006-11-19 12:55:59
After many long years this project is ending "completion." What started out as a Post-Ban Bushmaster AR-15 Carbine, has finally become what I consider to be the perfect "Jeep (as in basic do-all)" rifle.

Here is what I started with, in this image I have added a Tactical Sling from Tactical Tailor, a Sure-Fire 674 Light and Mount, and replaced the A2 stock with an A1 model. Perfectly functional as an all-around carbine, but the lack of a flash supressor and inability to fire it from me left shoulder bothered me.

Finally, the "Ugly Gun Ban" expired allowing me to get to work on really building this rifle the way I wanted it. First the upper reciever was shipped off to ADCO Firearms where I had the barrel cut down to 14.5", Phantom 5-port flash supressor, and a bayonet lug installed. When the rifle got back I installed the GG&G Free Floating Forearm. It was here I realized I had made a small mistake. I had asked ADCO to remove the front handguard cap under the impression that the GG&G Forearm was .25" longer than it was. Since the Flash Supressor is Permamently installed I can't fix this. Oh, well guess I'll have to eventually replace the 1:9" HBAR Barrel with an identical 1:7" HBAR Barrel that still had the handguard cap installed. That means I'm probably going to end up building a Dissy upper with a rail mounted BUIS with the old 1:9" barrel, which will mean I'll have to eventually build a lower for it etc, etc, ad nauseaum... Nothing like Black Rifle Disease.

To fix the sling issue I decided to go with a Daniel Defense A1 Single Point Sling Mount and a Single Point Sling from The Wilderness. It worked very well with one minor issue, if I wanted to sling the rifle out of the way while I was doing something else I couldn't do it. *sigh* But at least the single point sling did allow me to fire off-hand.

My Sure-Fire Weapon Light was seperated from it's front sight post mount and secured to the off-set rail using a pair of weaver low 1" Scope rings. The tape switch was secured to a Tango Down VFG mounted at about the mid-point of the rail.

This last weekend there was a Fun Show in town so I meandered down to pick up a couple of things I needed and to see what AR-15 goodies I could find. My first stop was at a particular dealer who just sells gear, most of which is surplus. From him I picked up a leather sling for my Garand as well as one for my Remington 700 PSS as well as a bayonet for the Garand. Then I began searching for AR stuff. Most noteably a reciever for my next AR build which I am intending to be an SPR Clone. After perusing all of the vendors wares, which included one dealer who had Rock River Arms recievers for $139 but they all had deep scratches in them and another with very good condition RRA recievers for $200! I settled on a nice gentleman with a modest selection of RRA recievers with no scratches and an asking price of $140. While purchasing my reciever I eyed up the 6 position RRA collapsible stocks he had on display, one of those and a wrench went into the bag. (I had to pick up the reciever on Sunday because Illinois has a 24 hour waiting period) I then headed over to another vendor I had perused earlier who had a large selection of GG&G products on display. There I found the Single Point Sling mount for a Carbine stock and as I went to pay for the part a small voice in my brain started mumbling something about a solution to my sling problem. At first I ignored it until it shut down the part of my brain that was trying to get the money out of my wallet. So not being able to pay for the part I wanted, I had to listen.

The solution to my problems was sitting there staring me right in the face. From what the guy behind the table told me it's a new Wilderness product; The Giles Single Point Sling Adapter.

That along with a GG&G Sling Thing for Dovetails and I was all set to go.

Here's my carbine in standard configuration. If you look you can see the gap between the front sight and the forearm along with the exposed gas tube. Not a huge issue IMO, but one I do plan to address eventually.

Here is my carbine with the Sling Thing mounted.

I currently keep the Sling Thing and adapter seperate from the carbine in my kit bag and have a cut-down allen wrench in the VFG's compartment for installation/removal. It would be better if the Sling Thing was QD style or had a knurled head on the screw so I could grab it with my fingers. May have to talk to T-Nut about that.

As a side note the wife tried out a few rifles for herself. She liked the weight and balance of the AK-47 Clones, but didn't like it's accuracy (or lack thereof) reputation. She then tried an M1 Carbine...

Guess what's #1 on her to buy list?
