Spysweeper does what now? by YakkoWarner 2005-02-28 10:20:01
I'm going through a former cow-orker's laptop to archive info and save stuff before wiping it for reuse. She had a habit of installing lots of crap (not to mention using Kazaa for downloading music), and she would often complain that her computer was running slowly (anyone want to guess why?). She purchased a program called Spysweeper, which is supposed to keep track of and remove spyware (and since it's a paid program, it should work better than all the freebies out there, right?). She insisted that her computer ran better when this program was active.

I opened up a web browser (logged in as her, with the Spysweeper program running) and was immediately hit by an ad. So, just for kicks, I downloaded the Microsoft AntiSpyware beta. It's still in the progress of doing a full system scan, but it's found 11 different spyware app signatures in 5 in-memory proceses, 136 files, and 135 registry keys. And climbing.
