i know that "cognac" can be translated to brandy, as can "jenever" so why not schnaps?
and jenever is made from grains, cognac from grapes: I think that many schnaps-brews are grain-based too, only with totally different "herbs" mixe in.
When it's sweet, I 'd call it "liqueur" (may be spelled liqor or liquor in american english ?)
The stuff that goes into "ein Bier, ein schnaps" is "a men's drink" so should not be too sweet.
